Shocking reason England assistant manager Anthony Barry left Wrexham now revealed

Anthony Barry, a former player for Wrexham, was recently named by Thomas Tuchel as the next assistant manager of England.

It goes without saying that Wrexham supporters are excited to watch their team play League One this weekend when club football resumes.

With a former Wrexham player taking on a new job with the Three Lions, England’s international break has been interesting.

After England’s manager, former Middlesbrough player Gareth Southgate, left in the summer, interim manager Lee Carsley had a difficult few months in command, which culminated in an unexpected 2-1 loss to Greece this month.

The FA decided to name former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel as Southgate’s permanent replacement since Carsley was obviously not up to the job.

The German did not waste any time in appointing his coaching team, as Anthony Barry, a former Wrexham player, joined England as assistant manager.

Barry had a respectable playing career before taking on the role of assistant manager for England, and he has now become an excellent coach.

Barry and Tuchel collaborated at Chelsea and Bayern Munich, the latter of which also had successful stints with Portugal and Belgium under Roberto Martinez.

He said: “He told me, ‘Fleetwood have offered me double the money’. I said, ‘Well, it’s too late, you’ve signed for us now’.

“He said, ‘Yeah but gaffer, come on, I can’t turn that down’. I said, ‘No, you’ve signed for us’. There had been back page headlines with the shirt on and everything.

“I couldn’t believe it. I sat there for a couple of days and thought, ‘If you don’t want to be here, if you want to be somewhere else, you might as well go’. Then he went to Fleetwood.

“The next time I saw him, he was on the bench at Chelsea. I was thinking, ‘What’s going on there?’

“Apparently he met Frank Lampard on a coaching course, ended up helping Frank and working his way up. That is a story of how you can get on, from the bottom to Bayern Munich and he’s now England assistant manager. Amazing. A nice lad as well, by the way.”

Anthony Barry time at Wrexham

Despite his unexpected departure from Wrexham in 2010, the current England coach did eventually play for the Red Dragons.

In 2016, he made his comeback to the Racecourse Ground, coming from Accrington Stanley on a free transfer.

After leaving, the former central midfielder made 32 appearances for Wrexham in all competitions, contributing one assist and two goals.

At the conclusion of the 2016–17 campaign, he hung up his playing boots and departed the team.
