Liam Keen shares one other reason Wolves are eager to keep the faith with Gary O’Neil
Although Wolves supporters are currently worried, the owners have said clearly how they feel about the manager.
Although it is acknowledged that the fixtures have been difficult, Gary O’Neil is now receiving support from his
Wolves superiors.
Even though they have only managed one point from their seven Premier League games, some believe that their
performances have been quite good thus far.
O’Neil came into Molineux a few days before the new season began and led the team to a 14th-place finish, so he has
a lot of credit built up from that campaign. If O’Neil had been more fortunate with injuries and VAR calls, Wolves
could have been higher up the standings.
In his discussion with O’Neil on the most recent episode of E&S Podcast, journalist Liam Keen provided one
explanation for the Wolves board’s steadfastness.
Wolves fear Gary O’Neil would be successful elsewhere
Even if O’Neil has support, there is undoubtedly more pressure coming.
The matches against Crystal Palace, Southampton, Fulham, and Bournemouth will be crucial for the Englishman to get points on the board.
Keen claims that there is another reason Wolves executives want to give O’Neil more time:
They reportedly worry that he might succeed greatly at a different club.
“They want to stick with Gary O’Neill, they want him to be the person going forward,” Keen remarked. Whether it’s
this season or ten years from now, I think O’Neil will be a very successful Premier League manager.
“I think there’s a general feeling at Wolves that ‘if we let him go, we’ll regret it further down the line, even if we do
stay in the Premier League this season’.
“They want to try and give him as long as they possibly can, but without putting their Premier League status at serious risk. They’re not at serious risk right now, but time is going to be the factor here, they’ve only got so long.”
O’Neil has undoubtedly shown his potential
There is no doubt that O’Neil has the potential to become a top manager.
He did superbly well last season under very tough circumstances, and he is now overseeing his first properly tough period at the helm.
