Matt Peet (Wigan), Mike Eccles (London), Willie Peters (Hull KR) and Paul Rowley (Salford) are on the shortlist for the 2024 Super League Coach of the Year

Four coaches are vying for this year’s title of 2024 Super League Coach of the Year after the shortlist was announced.

The 12 Super League head coaches voted to create the shortlist, which includes Matt Peet of the Wigan Warriors, Paul Rowley of the Salford Red Devils, Willie Peters of the Hull Kingston Rovers, and Mike Eccles of the London Broncos. The winner will be announced at Rugby League’s Awards Night on Tuesday, October 8, at the Royal Armouries in Leeds.

Furthermore, this is Peters’ first nomination. After an outstanding debut season in which the Robins made it to the play-offs and the Challenge Cup final by finishing in the top two, the Australian took over as head coach of Hull KR for the 2018–19 season. This was the team’s first appearance in the Super League.

And, perhaps unexpectedly considering that the London Broncos finished last in the league, head coach Eccles is one of the four finalists for Super League Coach of the Year.

Eccles led the Broncos to Super League promotion, earning him the title of Championship Coach of the Year in 2023.

The Leigh-born coach has also gained a great deal of praise for the manner his team has handled a range of difficulties in Super League this year, both on and off the field.

While operating with a mostly part-time roster in the top tier, the Broncos fused to throw in the towel against significantly superior rivals (on paper!) and funds, despite London finishing last after 27 rounds and only managing three wins.

Sam Burgess, who led Warrington Wolves to the Challenge Cup final at Wembley in his first season as manager, may have been the most unexpected absence.

This Friday, The Wire—who placed third on the Super League ladder following the regular season—will take on Hull KR in the semi-finals of the Super League play-offs, with the winner earning a trip to Old Trafford for the Grand Final.

On Wednesday, October 2, at 3:30 p.m., the candidates for Super League’s 2024 Steve Prescott MBE Man of Steel title will be revealed.
