Celtic suffer Champions League nightmare in 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund
The Scottish champions were picked apart on a tough night in Germany.
Borussia Dortmund crushed Celtic 7-1 in the Champions League, bringing an end to the Premiership title holders’ impressive start to the season.
As the hosts ran wild, Karim Adeyemi scored a hat-trick, Serhou Guirassy scored twice, and Emre Can and Felix Nmecha also scored goals. Daizen Maeda’s early goal was the only bright point for Celtic on a depressing evening.
Celtic entered the game this season with a perfect record, their winning streak extending to a 5-1 triumph over Slovan Bratislava in their Champions League debut.
Dortmund was looking to continue on their run to the championship game from the previous season, and they were having no trouble scoring goals as they trounced Club Brugge 3-0 on matchday one.
Dortmund got a fright almost immediately after kickoff when Emre Can appeared to have injured his ankle when stretching for the ball. He got back up quickly and was prepared to contribute to the thrilling opening of the game.
when just six minutes, Jamie Gittens raced in on goal when a ricochet went his way, but Kasper Schmeichel sprinted out to upend the winger before he could get anything on the ball.
Can took the penalty to give the home team an early lead after referee Jose Sanchez signaled for it.
Celtic answered practically right away. After gaining the ball and carrying it to the right, Arne Engels swung in a cross that Can was unable to handle, allowing Maeda to break in and bundle the ball into the net.
Dortmund was leading for the second time in two minutes. Adeyemi beat his defender with speed, then unleashed a shot that ricocheted off Auston Trusty and beyond Schmeichel.
The action calmed down after an exciting start, but the Bundesliga team kept posing a threat, especially when their quick front line gained the initiative. Serhou Guirassy’s attempt from a tight angle required Schmeichel to make a save, while Celtic’s defense was always trying to block shots, especially from Julian Brandt.
Dortmund added their third goal just under 30 minutes in. Adeyemi appeared to be in a position where a cross was more likely than a shot, but he rifled an unstoppable shot inside Schmeichel’s near post for his second goal after a corner was cleared only as far as him.
In the forty-first minute, Dortmund scored their fourth goal, again from the penalty spot. Engels intercepted Adeyemi as he attempted to handle the ball, and the spot kick was given. This time, Guirassy took charge and fired a hard shot past Schmeichel from a distance of 12 yards.
After just two minutes, the Scottish champions were behind 5-1, and things quickly got worse. Taking advantage of a mistake made by Callum McGregor, Adeyemi scored his hat-trick by clinically finishing low into the goal’s corner.
In an effort to slow down the momentum, Brendan Rodgers made two substitutions at halftime: Reo Hatate and Alex Valle replaced Greg Taylor and Paulo Bernardo.
Adeyemi’s forced removal two minutes into the second half caused Dortmund to make a substitution, but the action continued in the same direction as before the striker’s departure.
Although it was difficult for Celtic to attack first, Nicolas Kuhn was able to sneak behind the opposition defense thanks to a lengthy pass, but his feeble attempt was not good enough to concern Gregor Kobel.
Both teams made additional changes shortly after the hour, with Rodgers choosing to replace Kuhn and Kyogo with Yang and Adam Idah.
The game’s balance remained unchanged after the shift in players, as Dortmund quickly added their sixth.
Johnston’s ball gave the hosts the advantage as Celtic attempted to play out from the back. After a swift attack, Guirassy got the ball in his foot and deftly maneuvered around Liam Scales to finish low past Schmeichel.
As Celtic attempted to salvage some momentum, Hatate fired a long-range shot just over the crossbar, but Dortmund was comfortable with their win and content to take a little time to ensure they didn’t take any chances.
When Valle’s cross was deflected, Idah nearly scored a second goal. The striker slanted a header that appeared to cross the line, but Kobel quickly moved to block it.
Soon after, Dortmund scored again, with Nmecha hammering in a strong low shot to make it 7-1 after Celtic gave up the ball and failed to clear.
