Midfield Decision to Make: West Brom Team News and Predicted XI to Face Middlesbrough

West Bromwich Albion faces a crucial trip to Middlesbrough this weekend as they look to maintain their momentum in the Championship. Head coach Carlos Corberán has some important decisions to make, particularly in midfield, as he assesses his squad ahead of the clash.

West Brom will be without several key players due to injuries. Key midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah remains sidelined with a hamstring injury, leaving a gap in the middle of the park. Meanwhile, winger Adam Reach is still recovering from his long-term Achilles injury, and it’s unclear when he will return to action. Defensive stalwart Semi Ajayi is also a doubt due to a recent knock, while full-back Darnell Furlong could face a late fitness test.

One big question surrounds the midfield options available to Corberán. The absence of Chalobah means that the manager has to decide who will partner Jayson Molumby in central midfield. Alex Mowatt, who has impressed in recent weeks, is a strong contender for the starting role, though Corberán may also opt for the more defensive-minded Okay Yokuşlu, depending on his tactical approach against Middlesbrough’s attack.

Corberán has generally preferred a midfield duo that can both protect the defense and contribute going forward. With Molumby a near-certain starter, the question remains whether to partner him with Yokuşlu to provide extra defensive cover or Mowatt, who can offer more creativity and ball progression.

Given that Middlesbrough, under Michael Carrick, like to dominate possession and push forward aggressively, Corberán may lean towards a more solid defensive shape. This could tip the balance in favor of Yokuşlu, who has the physical presence and discipline to break up play and shield the backline.

In terms of attack, Jed Wallace and John Swift are likely to retain their places, with Wallace providing pace and creativity from wide areas and Swift offering the creative spark behind the striker. Brandon Thomas-Asante is expected to lead the line again, having shown his ability to cause problems for defenses with his physicality and movement.

Corberán’s choice in midfield will likely define West Brom’s approach in what promises to be a challenging away fixture. Whether he opts for a more defensive setup or goes for creativity in the center, his decision will be key in determining the outcome of the match.
