Sheffield Wednesday v West Brom: Man arrested over hate-filled post after fan’s tragic death at Hillsborough

Sheffield Wednesday v West Brom: Man arrested over hate-filled post after fan’s tragic death at Hillsborough.

Following the terrible death of a West Brom fan at Hillsborough Stadium, Sheffield Wednesday, a man has been detained over a hateful social media post.

Sadly, the fan died during the first half of the Championship game on Saturday, September 28, due to a medical emergency.

A depressing post on X (formerly Twitter) discussed the man’s passing and the 1989 Hillsborough tragedy, which took the lives of 97 Liverpool supporters.

Supporters of Sheffield Wednesday and West Brom have subsequently removed the post and the account from which it originated, but not before it was extensively disseminated and denounced on social media.

Today, South Yorkshire Police announced that a man has been taken into custody in relation to the incident.

“A man is currently in police custody following reports of malicious communications on social media,” the force stated in a statement.

Malicious messages are said to have been circulated after a man died on Saturday, September 28, during a football game.

“The 55-year-old man is still in police custody after being arrested on suspicion of malicious communications.”

In addition, the Hillsborough Golf Club has confirmed that a member’s suspension is a result of the post.

The Hillsborough Golf Club sent out the following statement on Facebook yesterday: “The golf club is aware of recent social media postings linked to a Hillsborough Golf Club member.” We started an investigation, and the member has been suspended during this time.

“We would like to extend our sympathies to the friends and family of the West Brom supporter who passed away during the team’s most recent game against Sheffield Wednesday due to a medical emergency.”
