Houston Astros’ Former Star Farmhand Signs Deal With AL Foe

A great minor league player for the Houston Astros has inked a new contract with an American League team.

When the Houston Astros chose Carlos Correa first overall in the 2012 MLB Draft at the age of just 17, it caused quite a stir. They also selected Lance McCullers Jr. in the first round of that same year, so that draft had a significant role in their success.

Nevertheless, Brett Phillips, the Astros’ sixth-round selection, developed into one of their top prospects even though he didn’t garner as much attention as the players selected before him.

His breakout year came in 2014 when he had a slash line of .310/.375/.529 with 17 home runs and 68 RBI at the Single-A affiliates when just 20 years old.

Following that season, Phillips was named Houston’s Minor League Player of the Year.

Because of this, he was rated as the Astros’ No. 7 prospect in 2015, ahead of Josh Hader, McCullers Jr., Teoscar Hernandez, and other future big league players.

Then, in return for Carlos Gomez and Mike Fiers during the 2015 season, Houston sent Phillips, Hader, Adrian Houser, and Domingo Santana to the Milwaukee Brewers.

He spent two years in the Brewers’ farm system before making his MLB debut in 2017.

Unfortunately for Phillips, this marked the beginning of his journeyman career as he was shipped to the Kansas City Royals in 2018, then was sent to the Tampa Bay Rays in 2020, and was then traded to the Baltimore Orioles in 2022.

Despite his prior success in the minor leagues, he struggled to create a consistent offensive groove, which contributed significantly to his mobility at the plate.

The veteran outfielder has signed a deal with the Chicago White Sox that will increase to $1.2 million if he makes it to the Major Leagues, and he will now try to restart his career with the team, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.
