Aston Villa reportedly hold an interest in signing Sporting CP winger Geny Catamo, with Unai Emery keen to bolster his attack this month.

That’s according to Birmingham Live, which reports that Aston Villa is now monitoring a number of wide players.

Villa has had a fantastic start to the season under Unai Emery, and they could surprise everyone by winning the Premier League.

It remains to be seen whether or not Villa can sustain their early-season form over the course of the campaign. Yet, they’ve undoubtedly been amongst the best in the division so far.

The January transfer window feels like an ideal opportunity for the Villains to plug some gaps in their squad and hand Emery with the necessary players to compete.

Villa have already been linked with a move for Crysencio Summerville, with Fabrizio Romano recently claiming they are interested in the Leeds United star.

But a new name has been thrown into the mix as Birmingham Live claims Geny Catamo is amongst their targets.

Villa interested in Sporting CP star Geny Catamo

According to the publication, Villa is interested in both Summerville and Catamo. It should be mentioned that it’s not yet apparent which positions Villa will give priority to this month.

Catamo has made twenty appearances for Sporting so far this season, contributing four goals.

After spending the previous two seasons on loan, the Mozambican international is having a bit of a breakout season for the Portuguese powerhouse.

He’s received high praise from Mozambique’s manager recently, who claims he was dubbed as one of his former club’s very own Lionel Messi.

“He has always possessed exceptional technical skill, and because he is left-footed, his nickname from the beginning of his football career was Maxaquene’s Messi, which says something about the caliber of play he displayed. In July of last year, Chiquinho Conde told A Bola, “He is our favorite right now.”

According to reports, Catamo’s contract has a £52 million release clause. It seems unlikely that Villa would pay that kind of money for a player who is still relatively unknown.

However, Emery might find the 22-year-old to be a compelling alternative, and Villa could use more offensive options.
