Dallas Cowboys: Jerry Jones Reveals Potential Future Head Coaching Candidate For Team (Report)

This is a particularly special season for the Dallas Cowboys. Not too long after defeating the Detroit Lions 20–19, the Cowboys are currently 11–5, well positioned to win the NFC East. With a victory over the Washington Commanders the following week, the Cowboys can secure the NFC East.

Despite this, owner Jerry Jones is unaffected and continues to consider the long term. He believes that one former player would make a fantastic head coach—possibly even for the Cowboys.

Dallas Cowboys Owner Jerry Jones Identifies One Former Player Who Would Make A Great Head Coach

On December 27 ESPN’s Ed Werder posted on X (Twitter) citing a Dallas Morning News article in which Jones compared Coach of the Year candidate Dan Campbell to Witten: “Jerry Jones’ quote at the end of this piece suggests he is considering Jason Witten as a future head coach for the Cowboys.”

Of course, Mike McCarthy is the Cowboys’ current head coach and has a decent track record. He has a 41-25 record with the Cowboys heading into the final week of his fourth season as head coach. Dallas has gone 1-2 in the playoffs during that time, so he has yet to experience sustained success. McCarthy’s last obstacle with the Cowboys will be to get past that.

What Would Witten Bring To The Cowboys As A Head Coach?

In the NFL, he played 16 seasons with the Cowboys and one with the Las Vegas Raiders, earning 11 Pro Bowl honors.

He is ranked fourth in all-time receptions with 1,228 catches for 13,046 yards and 74 touchdowns, making him one of the best tight ends in NFL history.

When he played, worked as an announcer, and led his son’s high school football team to a state title, his passion for the game was evident.

Jerry Jones appears to have his sights set on a future head coach who leaves a lasting impression on the team, even though McCarthy appears to be in charge for the time being.
