Arsenal given major Douglas Luiz transfer update amid January priority claim

Latest Arsenal transfer news with an update emerging on Douglas Luiz ahead of the January window

Prior to the January transfer window, Douglas Luiz of Aston Villa has provided an update to Arsenal regarding his future.

The Brazilian midfielder has been connected to the Gunners for the last eighteen months, following three unsuccessful attempts to sign him from Emirates Stadium in the summer.

After all three—the largest valued at £25 million—were turned down, Luiz went on to agree to a new deal at Villa Park.

Luiz has flourished under Unai Emery, adding 13 goals to his total in the last 18 months despite Emery’s reluctance to let him leave in the middle of the season.

“Douglas is playing very good,” he admitted after the 2-1 win against Spurs. “His commitment [is] amazing.

I want to keep him and he is happy with us.” Despite this, the Gunners could look to tempt him with a transfer as they search to sign a new midfielder after the injury blow suffered by Thomas Partey.

Further issues at the back however, with Takehiro Tomiyasu now absent, has seen their January transfer window priority

change to acquiring a defender. Nonetheless, there is still interest in Luiz, however the Athletic’s David Ornstein has clarified Arsenal’s stance on the 25-year-old.

Douglas Luiz, who signed a new deal in January after Arsenal attempted to sign him, is a subject of constant rumour.

Ornstein stated on The Athletic Football Podcast, “I’ve been told there’s no chance Arsenal will sign him this January, and

people I speak to about an Arsenal persuasion dispute that they’re going to go for him or that he’s the profile that everyone inside the club wants.”

Arsenal is reportedly interested in Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, while Gabriel Moscardo is another player who has been

connected to a move to Emirates Stadium. It is much more likely, though, that a defender will sign during the winter transfer

window, with Marc Guehi of Crystal Palace and Ousmane Diomande of Sporting CP as the two possible choices for Arteta and Edu.
