Vikings Floated as Offseason Trade Destination for Cowboys Quarterback

The quarterback position has yet again changed for the Minnesota Vikings. After Josh Dobbs had another unsatisfactory start in Week 14, head coach Kevin O’Connell selected Nick Mullens as the starting quarterback.

There will undoubtedly be additional questions during the offseason as a result of this predicament.

Before the upcoming season begins, Kirk Cousins will turn 36 years old. There isn’t a clear successor on the team, and after this season he will be a free agent. Minnesota should look into a number of options to strengthen its position. The Dallas Cowboys’ Trey Lance is now in the game.

On December 8, Connor Livesay of 33rd Team stated, “Lance might raise the ceiling on Dallas’ QB2 spot, but the Cowboys could get a better return for Lance than what they paid from teams like the Minnesota Vikings, New Orleans Saints, or Seattle Seahawks.” “Those teams may view Lance as a viable option if they miss out on the top passers in the draft.”

Lance, the third overall choice in the 2021 draft, is behind starter Dak Prescott in the standings and his MVP candidature may change Dallas’ backup plans. Lance hasn’t passed this season.

Cooper Rush is already signed through to the end of Prescott’s deal, which is approaching its last year.

Lance opened the 2022 campaign as the San Francisco 49ers’ starting quarterback. He suffered an ankle injury that knocked him out for the season and required multiple surgeries, losing his starting spot to Brock Purdy in the process. Dallas acquired Lance from San Francisco for a fourth-round pick in August.

He completed 66.7% of his passes for 287 yards, two touchdowns, and one interception during the preseason while still with the Niners.

Lance completed 54.9% of his passes for 797 yards with five touchdowns and three interceptions during his two seasons with San Francisco. In that time, he gained 235 yards and one touchdown on 54 carries.

He was an outstanding student at Marshall High School and a native of Marshall, Minnesota.

Dianna Russini of The Athletic reports that Minnesota hopes to get Cousins back for the upcoming campaign. However, given his age and contractual circumstances, it is wise to make future plans.

This may at least be a component of their strategy to deal with the impending problem.

Potential Trade With Cowboys Could Help Vikings

It’s possible that the Vikings will become victims of their own success. They might just manage enough victories to miss out on the best quarterback prospects, leaving them to fend for themselves with a mid-tier alternative or, in Lance’s case, a reclamation project.

Pro Football Focus’ Trevor Sikkema thinks they should take any necessary steps to position themselves to choose LSU standout and Heisman Trophy winner Jayden Daniels.

However, athletes like Michael Penix Jr. of Washington and Bo Nix of Oregon might be inexpensive choices.

Minnesota would have the No. 22 overall pick if the draft was held now. It isn’t, though. And they can still slide as low as the No. 2 overall pick if the season took even more of a downward turn. They have already withstood injuries to Cousins, who is out for the season, and Justin Jefferson, who has missed most of it

Proposed Vikings Trade Lands Former Top-3 Pick

Dallas’ selection will come in at the end of the round. This makes it simpler for Minnesota to outbid the Cowboys on their offer, as Livesay indicates is probably the case in this instance.

If the Lions fall short of the Cowboys in the standings, the Vikings may tender the fourth-round pick they acquired from the Detroit Lions in the T.J. Hockenson trade.
