Special’ £150k-a-week Aston Villa star has finally found his feet under Unai Emery

Youri Tielemans, the master of Aston Villa’s midfield, was shut out at the beginning of the season but is now an integral part of Unai Emery’s lineup.

After a trying last season at the King Power, Tielemans was signed by Leicester City on a free transfer.

Even though the Foxes were demoted to the Championship, he struggled there, but a number of major teams were eager to sign such a gifted midfield player.

Although it was hinted in the summer that Mikel Arteta was considering bringing the elite operator to Arsenal, the Gunners were preoccupied with other matters, such as attempting to finalise a move for Declan Rice.

Rather, Villa seized the chance to get Tielemans, who turned into their first acquisition of the summer transfer window.

Unai Emery was hoping to see the Tielemans of old at Villa Park, the one that helped the Foxes win the FA Cup and continuously contend for Europe. It was a low-risk signing on a free transfer with potentially huge rewards.

Of course, it has taken a while for the 26-year-old to acclimatize to his new surroundings and he’s had a lot of competition to contend with, especially from the likes of Boubacar Kamara, John McGinn and Douglas Luiz.

However, he’s taken his opportunity to impress Emery and is now enjoying an extended run in the team.

Tielemans is showing his ‘special’ talent at Aston Villa

Tielemans didn’t make his first Premier League start of the season until the victory over Fulham at the end of October.

And he has subsequently demonstrated why Wes Morgan, when he was at Leicester, called him “special.”

Tielemans is a technically proficient and astute player, well-known for his ability to maximise space and advance with the ball.

The Belgian maestri can thread passes through a needle’s eye because to his amazing passing range.

His composure under pressure has been key in Villa’s victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City, and Arsenal in recent weeks.

He’s grabbed two assists across those fixtures, slotting through an inch-perfect pass into Ollie Watkins for his well-taken finish at Spurs while assisting Leon Bailey with a clever flick for his solo effort against Man City.

Tielemans is a smart footballer, whose press resistance can help him manoeuvre out of tight situations and keep play ticking over.

The £150,000-per-week player has been used right behind Watkins during his current stint with the team, and he’s starting to develop a rapport with the striker.

Tielemans can pick him out with an accurate pass as the Englishman darts past the defence.

This degree of comprehension has been essential to Villa’s performance in games, especially in recent weeks when the arrival of the 65-cap international has aided Emery’s team in maintaining possession in those pivotal encounters.

For any football fan, Tielemans appears to be back to his best, which is a delight to watch.
