Micah Richards names Danny Ings in West Ham United and Aston Villa transfer verdict

According to Micah Richards, Aston Villa ought to pursue a player like Danny Ings, a West Ham outcast, during the January transfer window.

Only ten months ago, Ings moved from Villa to London Stadium in a £12 million contract that could have cost up to £15 million with add-ons [Sky Sports].

Nonetheless, Richards believes he is the kind of backup player the Villans need to continue to punch above their weight.

On December 12, 16:50, Richards stated on The Rest Is Football podcast: “Ivan Toney could be one, but he’d want to start every game.”

Playing the system and then having someone join the squad who isn’t expecting to play every week is tough. That’s why it’s challenging.

“Someone younger who is similar to Danny Ings, but not exactly Danny Ings.”

For similar reasons, West Ham acquired Ings from Villa earlier this year, but his tenure in East London has not exactly gone as expected.

The 31-year-old started just eight games in the second half of last season and only once so far this season.

On paper, Ings is ideally suited to being a back-up striker in that he knows how to find the net at this level but is not overly prolific.

At the same time, it is clear he is someone who needs minutes and momentum to thrive, which he is not getting at West Ham right now.

While he was used 18 times by Villa in the first half of last season, the Villans are a different beast this campaign with Ollie Watkins in attack.

If Ings wants to turn his career around, he might have to sign with a Premier League team that is in the bottom half.

But unless they can sign another striker, United is not really in a position to discuss a sell for self-serving reasons at this time.

Given the number of upcoming games, it’s possible that Ings gives his West Ham career a boost, which would make the choice a little more difficult.
