Latest Aston Villa transfer news as interest in Philippe Coutinho grows while former employers Barcelona look on

Aston Villa playmaker Philippe Coutinho is wanted by his former club Vasco da Gama, it has been claimed.

The 31-year-old is currently on loan to Al-Duhail in Qatar, where he has scored once in four appearances with no assists. His future at Villa looks uncertain, but his old team might be coming to his rescue.

That’s according to Sport, who say Vasco da Gama are “thinking” of signing Coutinho, though recognize it “will not be easy” to strike a deal with Villa. The process is at an “embryonic stage” so there may be little-to-no developments before the January transfer window.

In 2022, Coutinho left Barcelona to join Villa on loan before completing a €20 million deal to make the move permanent. According to reports, Villa is expected to pay the Catalan giants 50% of any profits from the sale of the Brazilian player.

Coutinho scored six goals for Villa in 43 games. During his first loan stint at the end of the 2021–2022 season, he completed five of those.

His professional career began with the Brazilian team Vasco da Gama. In 2008, he moved to Inter Milan and established himself as a prominent player in European football. If Coutinho were to go back there in the upcoming transfer windows, it would be a full circle moment in his career.
