Unai Emery relishing chance to leapfrog Manchester City

Exactly fifteen years have passed since Emery and Pep Guardiola first squared off, and that day will

never be forgotten as Valencia lost 4-0 to the formidable Barcelona club.

Twelve more matches later, Emery is still yet to triumph over his fellow Spaniard.

Opportunity No. 14 is Wednesday night’s visit from Manchester City to

Villa Park, which is one of the most anticipated Premier League games the venue has hosted in a long time.

When the 2008 defeat to Valencia was brought up during Tuesday’s pre-game

conference, Emery responded, “I remember it.”

“It is very important to remind myself of good moments and sometimes the bad

moments, because the balance is always very important.

“I am here now (at Villa) because I have been winning more than losing and have to keep doing that for the future.

“I have never watched a lot of things in my past. I am trying to build in the present and for the future.

“With the experiences I have I am not remembering I won, or I lost. When I will start remembering my past is when I will stop as a coach.

I now want to design and construct a new project, a new path, and a new goal to pursue. One of them is going to strive to win when they play tomorrow.

Emery, who believes Guardiola to be the greatest coach in the world, is not the only manager to have a dismal record against him.

He also rejects the notion that his rival’s illustrious career has been primarily fueled by his ability to consistently select the top players for his squads at Barcelona, Bayern Munich, and Manchester City.
