Just one week after his critique of Tottenham Hotspur became an internet meme, Roy Keane has applauded the team.

The Manchester United legend went viral after Ange Postecoglou’s side lost 2-1 against Aston Villa last weekend.

Keane – a boyhood Tottenham fan – referenced “Spursy”, a term used to describe the club’s perceived ability to bottle it on the big stage.

“It’s really poor defending from Spurs,” he said following the Villa clash, when Tottenham lost at home despite taking an early lead.

“You’ve got to get tight and be aggressive, they’ve just switched off at the wrong time. A lovely goal from Villa, but defensively from Spurs… really Spursy.”

Rival fans mocked Tottenham as one of their main insults was aired on Sky Sports. But few people – not even Keane – are taking aim at Spurs after they snatched a 3-3 draw at Manchester City.

Tottenham twice came from behind to earn a point, with Dejan Kulusevksi sending the away end into raptures. Spurs ended a three-game losing streak in the Premier League while maintaining the club’s decent record against the champions.

Only seven days after making headlines with his “Spursy” outburst, Sky Sports analyst Keane praised Tottenham at the end of the match. After 14 games, the point lifted Postecogou’s team to fifth place in the standings.

“They are deserving of many accolades,” he declared. Consider their performance, particularly the opening segment, and make a final effort. Despite my criticism throughout the years, they are deserving of the point.
