Tottenham Hotspur is Accused of Breaking Transfer Regulations by Signing a 140-goal Striker.

Due to back-to-back Premier League losses to Chelsea and Wolves, Tottenham Hotspur‘s incredible start to the 2023–24 season has been derailed in the past few weeks.

To make matters worse, the team is currently dealing with some very serious claims that it violated the laws of the English Football Association in the past involving former player and team hero Jermain Defoe.

Tottenham Hotspur Facing Allegations For Breaking Transfer Rules With Jermain Defoe.

What Are Spurs Being Accused Of?

According to Matt Lawton of The Times, the Football Association is preparing to examine a possible case of a major violation of football agency regulations over the 2008 transfer of Jermain Defoe from Portsmouth to Spurs for an estimated £7.5 million.

The Lilywhites are accused of having played a major part in pushing the transfer through with

the assistance of their former player Mitchell Thomas, an unregistered agent.

Thomas was named on a list of agents without an official license in 2008, but Tottenham avoided any issues back then.

While the FA took no disciplinary action against the North London heavyweights at that time, they

are willing to re-open the case now and could potentially decide to take action against them 15 years later.

Spurs are yet to comment on these allegations against them.

Is Spurs Going To Get Punished For Breaking Any Rules?

Lawton states that Luton Town was fined 10 points for a similar offense in the same year and that breaking the FA’s agency rules can lead to serious consequences.

It is also stated that, depending on how serious the infraction is, “clubs can be hit with a transfer ban,” lose points, or even get demoted.

Even while the FA may be getting ready to pick up where they left off in this case, it is still unclear whether Spurs will face severe sanctions for it all these years later.

Jermain Defoe is currently retired from the beautiful game. He scored 140 goals in 361 career appearances for the Lilywhites.

Although Everton was recently given a 10-point reduction for violating transfer regulations, it is unclear if Tottenham would face consequences for an act they committed a long time ago.
