A38 Closed Near Gloucester After Crash Near School: Traffic Disruption in Both Directions

The A38 was closed in both directions near Gloucester on Wednesday morning following a serious road traffic collision close to a local school, causing significant delays and disruption for commuters and parents on the school run.

Emergency services rushed to the scene shortly after 7:30am after reports of a multi-vehicle crash near the junction by Severn Vale School, just outside Quedgeley. The road was immediately shut between the Cross Keys roundabout and the Waterwells turn-off to allow emergency crews to attend to the incident and clear debris from the road.

Gloucestershire Police confirmed the incident involved at least two vehicles and that paramedics were called to the scene. Eyewitnesses reported seeing ambulance crews attending to at least one injured person at the roadside. An air ambulance was also seen landing in a nearby field, although it is currently unclear whether it transported any casualties from the scene.

A spokesperson for Gloucestershire Police said:
“We were called to reports of a serious collision on the A38 near Quedgeley at approximately 7:32am. The road has been closed in both directions while emergency services remain at the scene. We urge motorists to avoid the area and seek alternative routes.”

The road closure has had a major impact on traffic, with long tailbacks forming on both sides of the A38. Many drivers reported being stuck for more than 45 minutes during the morning rush hour. Traffic has also spilled over into surrounding areas, causing delays on the B4008 and the A417, as drivers attempt to find alternative routes.

Severn Vale School issued a statement on its website urging parents to be patient and advising that late arrivals would be accommodated without penalty.
“We are aware of a serious incident on the A38 this morning which is affecting access to the school. Our thoughts are with those involved. Students arriving late due to traffic disruption will not be penalised.”

Local bus services were also impacted, with Stagecoach West tweeting that several services were delayed due to the incident and the resulting road closures. In a statement, the company said:
“Due to a serious accident on the A38 near Quedgeley, our services 12 and 66 are experiencing delays of up to 40 minutes. We apologise for any inconvenience and thank passengers for their patience.”

As of midday, the road remains closed while police carry out collision investigation work. Highways teams are also assessing damage to road infrastructure and clearing the scene. Drivers are being advised to continue avoiding the area until further notice.

Motorists are encouraged to check local traffic updates before setting out and to allow extra time for their journeys if traveling in or around the Gloucester area.

Further updates are expected later today as police continue their investigation and work to reopen the road safely.
