New name drops as Premier League loanee joins Rangers transfer list, unexpected source

Unexpected source reveals a new name as a Premier League loanee on Rangers’ transfer list.

This transfer window’s most strange and tiresome story has probably been the Rangers’ constant conjecture about left-backs, with Luke Thomas appearing as a new name from an odd source.

The 22-year-old England Under-21 international is back at Leicester City, where manager Philippe Clement of the Gers has noted that he could be a target. He made 12 appearances while on loan at Sheffield United in the Premier League the previous season.

Even if Luke Thomas has the kind of profile that suggests he would be regarded as an author and well-known face around Ibrox—Jeff Holmes is the unknown source of the connection—Rangers have more urgent worries than a new left-back.

Luke Thomas of Leiceister City is connected to Rangers.

As discussed by Rangers News before, there is an issue with recruiting English players.

They are more likely to be sold at a profit if they do well given that the Premier League is on our doorstep and has the deepest pockets in world football but there is a downside too.

Luke Thomas is now paid £20,000 per week, according to Salary Sport. Although he has an option to sign a new deal in the summer and could receive a development fee, he will be seeking a raise this summer regardless of whether he leaves or not.

Luke Thomas may not be the right player for Rangers to replace two international defenders, Borna Barisic (who has more than 30 Croatian caps) and Ridvan Yilmaz (who the club values at £5 million).

Prior to moving into midfield, players like Dujon Sterling and Kieran Dowell were major money earners but contributed very little to the team.

Of the names suggested so far, Thomas is probably the only one that you would look at and question whether or not it made sense.

A

Is there someone who can replace Barisic on a par in the summer should he decide to depart once his contract expires? Perhaps.

But will a player like Luke Thomas, who has been judged ineligible by a Championship team, truly help Rangers’ defense?

Since Nils Koppen is starting over, it would be unwise for him to make the same mistakes again.
