Sheffield Wednesday are keen to strike a loan deal for Southampton’s Ronnie Edwards and feel Shea Charles’ success will help them, as per The Star.
Sheffield Wednesday are looking to strengthen their ranks in the upcoming January transfer window as they look to bridge the gap to the play-offs.
The general feeling around Hillsborough is that the Owls are capable of making a push for the top six this season, but some further enhancements are needed in the transfer window to give them a real chance of squeaking into the top six.
The Steel City outfit currently sit 11th in the Championship table. They’re four points off the top six heading into 2025 after being beaten by Preston North End last time out.
Now, with January right around the corner, Sheffield Wednesday are wasting no time in the pursuit of new additions.
According to The Star, the Owls are very keen on securing a deal for Southampton centre-back Ronnie Edwards, who is set to be available on loan next month. The 21-year-old is in high demand but he’s atop the list of transfer targets at Hillsborough and there’s a hope a deal can be struck.
The report notes that Wednesday hope Shea Charles’ success from Southampton will be viewed as a ‘bargaining power’ with other clubs eyeing Edwards.
A much-needed move
Edwards was a star player at Peterborough United before joining Southampton and it was the general feeling that such a move was well-deserved for the former England youth international.
He had starred in both League One and the Championship with the Posh and has long been tipped to make a big jump. However, game time with the Saints has been hard to come by.
To get back to his brilliant best, a Championship loan seems ideal, and Sheffield Wednesday will be hoping to benefit.
They’re certainly not going to be the only ones after the former Posh starlet though, so time will tell whether he ends up at Hillsborough or if a move elsewhere beckons.
A smart transfer for all
Other clubs will stake their claims, but it does feel as though Sheffield Wednesday is an ideal destination for Edwards.
The Saints have seen how midfielder Charles has thrived there over the first half of the season and they know manager Danny Rohl can be entrusted with top prospects. He’ll manage Edwards carefully but most importantly, he’ll give him the chances he needs too.
Edwards is flexible enough to play in a back three or four for Rohl and his comfort on the ball will see him slot into the backline well.
A Wednesday move works for all and as they push for a deal, it’s certainly feasible that this one gets done in good time.
