Power cuts warning in 13 cities as England prepares for 15-hour snowstorm

Up to 13 major cities in England have been told to prepare for a 15-hour snowfall.

A 15-hour snowfall on Monday and Tuesday could knock out electricity in up to 13 major cities throughout England. Households are being warned that an Arctic blast could cause disruption throughout England, affecting travel and electrical supply.

The Met Office has issued a 15-hour yellow weather warning for ice and snow, beginning at 7 p.m. Monday and lasting until 10 a.m. Tuesday.

In Scotland, the snow begins even earlier, with a warning issued at 4 p.m. today, Sunday, November 17.

The Met Office is warning of potential power outages due to snow, and residents in vulnerable areas are being asked to prepare.

The warning covers up to 13 major English cities, including Manchester, Liverpool, Newcastle, Leeds, Sheffield, Nottingham, Stoke, Chester, Lincoln, Derby, York, Durham and Hull.

The yellow weather warning will, however, affect additional places like as Bangor in North Wales, Carlisle on the North West coast, Middlesbrough, and the entire Yorkshire region.

The Met Office warned residents in impacted areas: “People cope better when they have planned ahead of time for the risk of power outages or being cut off from services and amenities due to snow.” It’s simple; gather torches and batteries, a cell phone power pack, and other necessary supplies.

“Be prepared for weather alerts to change quickly: when a weather warning is issued, the Met Office advises maintaining current on the weather prediction in your area.

“The most likely scenario is that the most of the snow will accumulate on hills, with 5 to 10 cm possible above 200 meters and up to 15 to 20 cm above 300 metres. There is a little potential of snow falling at lower elevations, where 5 to 10 cm would be much more disruptive, although this is extremely uncertain.

“As rain, sleet and snow clear on Tuesday morning, ice may form on untreated surfaces.”

Those expecting power outages have been advised to stock up on torches and candles, as well as batteries, and to charge their phones and any phone charging power banks to ensure they are fully prepared. You should also insulate pipes to keep them from freezing, and seal any draughts inside the home. When it’s light outside, open your curtains, then close them again when it’s dark.
