Three keys to Washington earning a playoff spot against Atlanta

Three keys to Washington earning a playoff spot against Atlanta

The Washington Commanders can lock up a playoff spot this weekend when they host the Atlanta Falcons on Sunday

Night Football. Here are three keys to them getting a primetime win.

1. Contain Bijan Robinson.

Although Atlanta’s offence features a number of gifted players, like Drake London, Kyle Pitts, and Darnell Mooney,

Bijan Robinson might pose the Commanders with the greatest challenge on Sunday.

Despite a slight setback against Saquon Barkley and the Philadelphia Eagles in the second half of the season, the

Commanders’ run defence has since recovered. Barkley, who leads the NFL in rushing yards, guided the Eagles’

offence to a 211-yard day with 150 yards on 29 carries.

Of course, some background is necessary for that. Barkley had 109 yards in the first quarter, but he wasn’t very good

the rest of the game. After his 68-yard touchdown, he had 41 yards for the remainder of the game. It is still regarded

as a weakness for the Commanders, who have allowed the fourth-highest number of rushing yards per game this season.

Robinson, who has 1,196 yards and 10 touchdowns on 259 carries and was a major contributor to the Falcons’ two-

score victory over the New York Giants, has the second-highest offensive for his position according to Pro Football

Focus and the seventh-most yards after contact. If the Commanders want to make Michael Penix Jr.’s second start a

misery (more on that in a moment), eliminating the Falcons’ most important run game component would be one of

the best ways to do it.

2. Play cleaner football on offense.

As impressive and memorable as the Commanders’ comeback effort was against the Eagles, committing five

turnovers is simply not a consistent formula and will need to be cleaned up against the Falcons.

To be fair, that doesn’t reflect the Commanders’ performance this season. They had only given up the ball nine times
before the Eagles game, which would have tied them for the second-fewestest of the season. The offensive success
has been aided by their ball security; Jayden Daniels has more than three times as many touchdowns and only eight
interceptions. Despite their three fumbles against the Eagles, the offence has only fumbled the ball six times, which

is still among the fewest in the league.

Although the Falcons’ defence doesn’t force turnovers as aggressively as the Eagles’, they have had a bit of success in

the last two weeks. Two of their interceptions were returned for touchdowns against the Giants, giving them six in
that time frame. However, that figure doesn’t accurately reflect their performance this season, much like the

Commanders. They lost four of five games from Weeks 9–14, and they only had one takeaway during entire time.

This season, the Falcons are 1-5 when they don’t force at least one turnover and 7-2 when they do. For the

commanders, the situation is clear: play clean football, and their life will be much simpler.
