Middlesbrough put ‘plan in place’ for ‘dream’ youngster after major breakthrough

George McCormick, a youngster from Middlesbrough, has had an incredible few months.

The 19-year-old had never been included in a Boro matchday squad before this season, but he has stepped up and made a name for himself at the Riverside after making an incredibly impressive summer breakthrough that attracted Michael Carrick’s attention.

McCormick has signed a new long-term contract with his hometown club, played twice in the Carabao Cup, and been included in the matchday squad for eight of Boro’s 15 league games since the season began.

What comes next?

“Like any player, he ultimately determines what happens next in performances,” head coach Michael Carrick stated.

Boro is not going to hurry McCormick. Arriving late in the summer transfer window, Neto Borges has made himself the team’s first choice left-back. Boro also has Alex Bangura and Lukas Engel, both of whom are presently sidelined, on its roster.

The coaching staff of Boro’s first squad and academy will consider the best course of action in light of this to make sure McCormick keeps improving.

“There is a plan in place,” Carrick stated. Depending on the situation, it may entail playing with the under-21 team, staying with the team, or going on loan on occasion.

Timing and performance levels also play a big role in that. He is now training and playing for the 21s with the first team squad because nothing can happen until January. After that, we’ll make a decision.”

McCormick impressed during the summer and early part of the season, as evidenced by the fact that he was offered a new contract in October, only five months after signing his previous one. It was the proper thing to do, and it came naturally to us,” Carrick added.

Since returning in the summer, George has performed admirably. “I mentioned him quite a bit, but it’s clear that he returned for preseason, joined us in Portugal, trained incredibly well, and seized the chance.
