‘Not a great day’ – Middlesbrough boss fumes after Sheffield Wednesday comeback ruins Boro’s Boxing Day

The way Middlesbrough’s team allowed Sheffield Wednesday to return at the Riverside on Thursday infuriated manager Michael Carrick.

When the Owls visited town for their Boxing Day match this week, Boro took the lead thanks to goals from Ben Doak and Finn Azaz. The hosts were leading 3-0 at the half and cruising following a poor first half from Danny Röhl’s team.

But Wednesday came out swinging in the second half, with Svante Ingelsson, Josh Windass and Yan Valery getting three quickfire goals to get things level en route to a 3-3 draw that saw the visitors extend their unbeaten run by another game.

It was “not a great day” for his team, and Carrick, who wasn’t pleased with way things went, acknowledged that they would even find it difficult to focus on the first half’s positives after what transpired in the second.

He remarked, “It’s worse than frustrating,” after the fact. We shouldn’t have let it fall apart so fast and turn upside down when we had so much power and were in such a strong position. Because of the outcome, we won’t take the positives as we should in the first half. We seem to have gained nothing from this. The day isn’t going well.

“A bit of decision making, a couple of half deflections for the two goals, it doesn’t take much for it to go both ways,” Carrick remarked when asked what went wrong at the beginning of the second half. We made progress in the first half, but we neglected to address too many issues in the second.

We’ll still learn a lot from our abilities, but we are aware that we cannot play games for extended periods of time and then stop. We must have a level of performance that is constant. You have to finish it. We continue to put ourselves through more hardship than is necessary.
