Norwich City massively hit the jackpot with £150k star and these 5 others
Norwich City has played in the Championship for most of the past ten years, with the exception of three Premier League relegation seasons.
But if it weren’t for their amazing transfer market success record, they probably wouldn’t have had those opportunities in the top flight at all.
Signings from Brazil to Denmark and all points in between are included in this list.
Let’s examine six signings when Norwich truly struck gold without further ado.
Teemu Pukki
Teemu Pukki is one of the few that have made it to Carrow Road and left their mark on the club.
After joining the Canaries on a free transfer from Danish team Brondby, the Finland international made 210 games, contributing to two campaigns that won promotion with 88 goals and 29 assists.
If the club had originally paid millions on him, there wouldn’t have been any objections, but the fact that he came to a free makes the deal even more appealing.
Gabriel Sara
When Norwich saw Gabriel Sara playing for Sao Paulo in Brazil, they bet £6 million that he could regain his form in England.
His 96 appearances, 21 goals, and 17 assists left no room for dispute regarding his success.
Furthermore, Norwich made a nice profit when they sold him to Galatasaray of Turkey just two years later for a reported £20 million.
Emi Buendia
Emi Buendia was not the Premier League household name he is now when Norwich signed him in the summer of 2018.
At the time, he had made significant contributions in the Spanish second tier, making his £1 million cost from Getafe look unusual.
Buendia’s career prior to Villa move, as per Transfermarkt | |||
---|---|---|---|
Team | Apps | Goals | Assists |
Norwich City | 121 | 24 | 41 |
Cultural Leonesa | 42 | 7 | 12 |
Getafe | 40 | 3 | 1 |
Getafe B | 34 | 7 | 1 |
How wrong a notion that would prove to be, however, when he came in and scored eight goals and added 17 assists in all competitions in his first season at Carrow Road, before tempting Aston Villa to make a club-record £33million swoop for the creator a few years later, another massive money spinner for the Canaries.
James Maddison
Norwich had previous experience acquiring attacking midfielders and selling them for high prices, having done so with James Maddison a few years before.
Tottenham signed the player from Coventry City in early 2016 and loaned him back to the Sky Blues for the rest of the season.
In his one season at Norwich, he scored 14 goals, assisted eight, and drew a £20 million bid from Leicester City in 2018.
Ben Godfrey
Norwich City signed Ben Godfrey from York City in the non-league market for £150,000, unlike many of their previous high-profile acquisitions from elite football leagues.
Godfrey took some time and a loan to Shrewsbury Town to break into the team, but once there, he was unstoppable in the 2018/19 season.
After two seasons as a prominent member of the Canaries’ backline, Everton paid £20 million to sign him in 2020.
Grant Holt
Grant Holt, like his successor Teemu Pukki, will be remembered as one of Norwich’s greatest players.
Signed from Shrewsbury for £400,000, Holt’s goals propelled the club from League One to the Championship the following season, securing Premier League football.
In 168 games across divisions for the Canaries, he scored 78 goals, provided 35 assists, and brought memories to a club that was once considered a pipe dream.
They’ll probably never spend their money as well again.
