Rangers suffer latest transfer blow as midfield target pens contract extension

For supporters of Rangers, the January transfer window has been discouraging thus far because while the team of Philippe Clement has been connected to several players, not much has changed. The hype surrounding many of the names that have been suggested for a move to Ibrox in recent weeks seems to have cooled down. The Belgian manager has only signed one player to yet, Fabio Silva, on loan from Premier League team Wolves.

After signing a contract extension at Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb, midfield target Marko Bulat is one player who most definitely won’t be travelling to Glasgow in January.

The playmaker, who has been capped at every international youth level up to the under-21s, was one of several transfer options being closely monitored by the Light Blues after scoring five goals and providing two assists in 23 appearances across all competitions this season.

Before the transfer market opened in December, Nils Koppen, the new head of recruitment for Rangers, reportedly inquired about the 22-year-old’s status at the HNL club, according to Football Scotland. Coming off the sidelines for a short while, Nicolas Raskin is a competitor that Clement wants to challenge alongside veteran John Lundstram in the engine room. Since joining the team in the summer, Jose Cifuentes has had difficulty getting off to a strong start, and Ryan Jack has missed more than two months due to injury.

But it was thought that Dinamo would be asking for about £5 million, which would probably put a stop to the Gers’ interest in the player as they consider their other choices and the remainder of their January schedule. Additionally, Bulat has put an end to any residual dreams of moving to Govan by signing a new contract that will keep him at Zagreb until 2028. This came about after manager Sergej Jakirović moved swiftly to extend an offer to the player.
