“No disrespect to Burnley” – Pundit backs Blackburn Rovers in race to sign Oli McBurnie

Oli McBurnie, who moved to Las Palmas in Spain six months ago, could be returning to England.

According to Alan Nixon, the striker might join Lancashire rivals Burnley and Blackburn Rovers on loan.

Unsurprisingly, both clubs are looking to add some much-needed firepower to their squads, with no striker in either team scoring more than four goals this season.

However, both sets of fans are likely delighted with their teams’ results, with the Clarets in third position and Rovers in fifth.

This would surely make the Scottish striker an intriguing proposition, as his good record of 44 goals in 125 second-tier games suggests he might assist either team climb the league standings.

Palmer backs Blackburn in McBurnie chase

Palmer spoke exclusively to Football League World about the alleged interest in McBurnie, saying: “McBurnie left Sheffield United in the summer to join Las Palmas, which surprised everyone.

“He joined Sheffield United in 2019 and had five good years. He scored 29 goals and assisted seven times in 159 appearances for the Blades, helping Chris Wilder’s side finish ninth in the Premier League in 2019-20.

“He has only two goals and three assists in 16 appearances for Las Palmas, and it appears Burnley and Blackburn are interested in bringing him back to the Championship, where we know he can play exceptionally well.

“The most appealing option for the striker would be Burnley, who are currently near the top of the league.” We all know that Burnley and Blackburn do not have a lot of money, therefore a loan arrangement would be ideal.

“He would be assured greater playing time at Blackburn Rovers, but Burnley are performing admirably and will be striving for automatic promotion.

“If I were Oli, and no disrespect to Burnley, I would prefer Blackburn. If Burnley are promoted, I believe he will be on his way out again. At Blackburn, he would play every week.

McBurnie loan deal makes sense for both Blackburn and Burnley

While McBurnie has never appeared to be a natural goal scorer in the Premier League, his performance in the second division suggests he deserves another chance at that level.

During the 2018-19 season with Swansea City, the Scotsman scored an amazing 24 goals in 44 games, causing many to hope he will maintain this form in the years ahead. Unfortunately, that has not been the case, with his 13 goals in the 2022-23 season representing his greatest return to date.

Despite these reservations, neither the Clarets nor Rovers should rule out a move for the 28-year-old, who, in the proper conditions, could be a genuine menace in front of goal.

If Las Palmas approve a loan move, both Lancashire teams should pursue a deal, since a brief six-month contract should leave them with little financial issues.
