I don’t think West Ham can win anything easily these days, but if they could, it would be against Southampton.
This season, the South Coast team has a pitiful six Premier League points, including one from their most recent match against Fulham. Although new manager Ivan Jurić was in the stands, it seemed that they had a good bounce against the Cottagers.
More likely, it was the coaching staff’s choice to switch back to a more practical approach and drop fired coach Russell Martin’s insistence on offensive football.
Given that Jurić has discussed his high-pressing style of play, it’s possible that the Saints team against West Ham will differ greatly from the one against Fulham, which might work in Julien Lopetegui’s favor.
Realistically, the Hammers’ manager must continue to build on a three-game winning streak, as he mentioned yesterday. Although Lopetegui does not need to win Southampton vs. West Ham, losing to the league’s poorest team would raise questions about his future once more.
Because of this, the Spaniard is under pressure in this game, but Jurić will see an opening. Southampton would have considered the home match against the Irons to be winnable and would have seen the three games against Fulham, West Ham, and Crystal Palace as favorable.
We fail to play well after halftime, so Lopetegui needs to do everything in his power to avoid the second-half blitz that has become a hallmark of Hammers games.
Nevertheless, I don’t think Southampton will have the firepower to defeat us, even if the new Saints manager rearranges his defense.
