Regarding the reinstatement of VAR officials who assisted during the Scottish League Cup final, Rangers has issued an official statement.
After failing to give Rangers a penalty in extra time at the national stadium on December 15, Alan Muir and Frank Connor, the referees, were suspended from their positions.
Willie Collum, the SFA head of refereeing, then addressed the incident, stating that Muir and Connor made a mistake in the call that day.
However, as was announced on Monday evening (December 23), Muir and Connor will be returning to duty earlier than anticipated. The latter will run the line at Rugby Park on Boxing Day for Kilmarnock vs. Aberdeen, while Muir will do the same at Celtic Park against St Johnstone on December 29. Rangers has now responded to the announcement on their official website: “Rangers FC has contacted the Scottish FA to express serious concerns and ask several questions regarding the swift reinstatement of the two VAR officials involved in the officiating failure during the recent Premier Sports Cup Final.
Additionally, we observe that one of the officials was assigned to an SPFL Premiership game that featured the team that benefited from the mistake.
“The Scottish FA’s actions cast doubt on its dedication to promoting accountability and raising officiating standards. Although Rangers FC completely supports the independence of officiating appointments and the requirement that referees function independently, the Scottish FA’s reputation and public trust are directly impacted by how it responds to such high-profile missteps.
“The decision to promptly reinstate the officials has drawn a lot of media attention to the officiating failure and the officials involved, especially for a match involving the team that profited from the error in question.”
This was avoidable and expected, and it goes against the Scottish FA’s claimed duty of care to its match officials.
“Mistakes do happen in football, and how they are handled matters enormously,” the statement continued. We would strongly want the Scottish FA to show that it is committed to raising the standard and reliability of officiating in an open and honest way.
“Our goal is to promote higher standards and accountability, not to question the legitimacy of the Scottish FA or the independence or integrity of match officials. Influence is not the issue here. It has to do with sound government.
“Rangers FC expects tangible steps to be taken and remains committed to holding the Scottish FA accountable in the interests of the game.”
