The problem is that, as time goes on, it’s said that Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement are cutting out players one by one from their wish list.
The player who appears to fit the most requirements for Rangers is Gijls Smal, a full-back from Twente who is rumored to be a potential replacement for Ridvan Yilmaz should he leave Ibrox.
Josh Doig made the most sense out of the gate, but even with his age, Serie A experience, and homegrown status, he just cannot be justified at over £5 million.
Despite Marseille’s agreement with the young Scot, Sassuolu seems to have the best chance of winning that race. But, given Verona, don’t be shocked if there are a few more twists in this one.
The most intriguing connection was David Jurasek, who was only purchased by Benfica for £12 million in the summer. The Czech international would have been a fantastic short-term option, but Hoffenheim has apparently agreed to a loan to buy arrangement, giving them the upper hand.
An early prospect was out of contract Kai Wagner currently playing in MLS but he has since put pen to paper on new terms.
Smal can negotiate terms on a pre-contract agreement with the intention of departing in the summer. This could increase his chances of replacing Borna Barisic, should he become available, although as Gers manager Clement notes, any departures would need to be replaced.
Smal and Ridvan have comparable playing styles, thus even if he didn’t play with Jurasek, Wagner, or Doig, he is still the most obvious choice.
Now all we have to do is agree to a charge for the Turkey international; sadly, this one may take a few more days or even hours.
It makes sense that Rangers supporters have hypertension.
