Greg Stewart answers frustrated ex-Rangers star’s striker plea after India spell

Following his stint in India, Greg Stewart responds to an irate ex-Rangers player’s cry for help.

Greg Stewart, a former striker for Rangers, secured a contract with Kilmarnock after being cut by Indian team Mumbai City.

Since leaving Ibrox in 2021, the 33-year-old former Gers forward has been playing in the tropical subcontinent. He first joined the City Group club in 2022 after playing for Jamshedour.

Stewart was released by the Mumbai team, citing “mutual termination” in an official statement. He is currently back in Scotland and has arranged a transfer to his previous team, Kilmarnock.

Following the expiration of his contract with Birmingham City in 2019, Greg Stewart signed a free agent contract with Rangers. The striker had previously spent the season on loan at Rugby Park and then at Pittodrie with Aberdeen.

Kilmarnock signs Greg Stewart

Killie hasn’t disclosed the duration of the contract in an official release, but the addition of Greg Stewart gives manager Derek McInnes and his team a significant boost.

After adding former Dundee United, Celtic, and Hearts winger Gary Mackay-Steven to the Ayrshire ranks during the week, Kilmarnock manager McInnes had lamented a lack of striking options.

The former Rangers midfielder has been outspoken about a “dearth” of number nine options in modern football after a switch away from the traditional 4-4-2 formation.

For Kilmarnock, Greg Stewart looks like a very shrewd addition given their chase for European football and heady ambitions in the Scottish Premiership this season.

Derek McInnes has done a very impressive job at Rugby Park with the club in 4th, five points off Hearts in 3rd having played a game more.

Former Rangers forward returns to the Scottish Premiership

Although Greg Stewart’s return to the Scottish Premiership will be welcomed by Rangers supporters, they will be praying that the gifted attacker doesn’t return to haunt the Ibrox club this season.

Stewart, a childhood bluenose, spent two years in Glasgow living the dream, despite his initial struggles to gain acceptance into Steven Gerrard’s squad.

The striker made 33 appearances for the Ibrox club after joining on a low-risk free deal, contributing seven assists and three goals.

Stewart had a successful three seasons in India, scoring 26 goals and won the Indian Super League with both Mumbai City and Jamshedpur.

When the team lifted 55 in 2021, the striker may add these medals to the Scottish Premiership one he received at Rangers.
