The Best Move for the Boston Celtics at the Trade Deadline Is No Move at All

The NBA trade deadline of February 8 is quickly approaching, and much of discussion goes along with it.

The Boston Celtics are now the subject of multiple rumors, the most of which are merely that—rumors.

With a 32-9 record, the Celtics have the best record in the NBA. This season, they have not dropped a

game at home. The greatest option for the Celtics at the deadline is to make no moves at all, even if

there’s always space for improvement.

The Boston Celtics Should Ride With What They Have

The Celtics hit the halfway point of the season after a 117-98 victory over the San Antonio Spurs on

Wednesday, January 17. They have only suffered back-to-back losses once, and they have four separate

wins streaks of five games or more.

The Celtics required a makeover after losing to the Miami Heat in Game 7 of the Eastern Conference

Finals at home the previous season. In response, they made two crucial decisions that resulted in the

return of veterans Kristaps Porzingis and Jrue Holiday.

Although Boston lost Marcus Smart in the Porzingis trade, and Malcolm Brogdon and Robert Williams

were traded for Holiday, the revamped Celtics had a more evenly matched roster. The Celtics have the

strongest starting five in the NBA with Derrick White replacing Smart in the starting lineup.

Al Horford, a seasoned center, is another luxury they have when he comes off the bench.

Talent has certainly been the key to Boston’s success this season, but never underestimate chemistry.

This team is close.

Sure, the Celtics could use a little more size off the bench, but at what expense? Is it worth grabbing a

third-string center with size if trading Payton Pritchard or Sam Hauser is involved? Luke Kornet has

more than held his own in the absence of Porzingis. He and Neemias Queta, who had eight rebounds in

12 minutes against the Spurs, have proven they can hold down the fort when called upon.

Any addition may throw off the harmony that Boston has created this season, both on and off the court.

In the event that there are no significant injuries over the next three weeks, the Celtics should decide not

to make any trades by the deadline.

The Celtics now have five players who can take over offensively on any given night because to the

signings of Porzingis and Holiday. Now, any of the five players can light it up for the Celtics, unlike in the

past when they were overly dependent on Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown.

Stats have been sacrificed in large quantities due to the crowded lineup. The other four starters, aside

from White, have all seen a decline in their output from a season prior.

Tatum says that’s okay as long as the victories continue to come in.
