John Eustace has denied that Blackburn Rovers are interested in signing Oli McBurnie, but admits that is the kind of talent he would like to see added in January.
According to journalist Alan Nixon, Rovers and Burnley are interested in signing the Las Palmas striker on loan next month. McBurnie joined the Spanish club in the summer after leaving Sheffield United.
Rovers want to sign a number nine with Championship experience, but Eustace was unaware of any interest in the Scot particularly.
He did add that McBurnie’s level of pedigree is what he hopes Rovers would sign, as he is looking for ‘two or three quality players’ to enhance the squad.
When queried directly about McBurnie, he answered, “You’d have to ask the recruitment team for names.” “I have not discussed the name with the team.
But that quality, for sure. He is a seasoned Championship player. He achieved promotion out of the league and scored goals.
“Anyone of such ilk would be beneficial to the organisation. I just want to bring in quality to help the group, regardless of the position. “That will be wonderful.
The group has worked extremely hard to get here, so we need more quality to come in and convince the rest of the lads that we are adding top quality. It’s what we all want.
“Whatever the jobs are, the organisation simply wants talent to come in and help. Not a lot, just two or three to really keep us in the mix and keep us moving.”
Eustace also said that Rovers may have to reconsider their plans following the injuries to Lewis Travis and Harry Pickering.
The former will return in early February, but cover at left back may be required. “We have to remember that we were one of the favourites for relegation, so it’s been a big achievement up until now,” he added of the club’s situation at Christmas.
“But there is no winning or losing at Christmastime. They have achieved admirably, and they are eager to continue achieving and improving.
“I’ve talked about recruitment, and we all want great players to come in and help the group maintain the momentum we’ve built.
“I hope we receive that. There is some money to spend, I’ve been told, and the recruitment staff is working on it. I’m hoping they return with the quality that the group and the fans desire, which I’m confident they will.
“It’s possible that these injuries will change something. We will need to speak with both the recruitment staff and the board.
Hopefully, people can see that we’ve been missing two crucial players from the squad for a long time, and I’m hoping we can bring in talent to help that group. “The injuries might make it (left-back) somewhere we need to look at in January.”
