Sheffield Wednesday star tipped to be sold for “decent fee” as Tottenham circle
One of the Owls fans in the Football League World has picked Pierce Charles as Sheffield Wednesday’s most promising young player.
There is a compelling argument to be made that Wednesday features two of the division’s top under-21 goalies. Both Charles, 19, and James Beadle, 20, have played for their nations at the under-21 level; Charles is making his first-team debut for Northern Ireland this season.
While Charles is a Wednesday native who joined the main squad from their youth, Beadle is on a season-long loan from Brighton & Hove Albion.
There have been, and there will continue to be, strong talent coming through the Hillsborough system, but the glovesman may be the pick of the bunch.
Pierce Charles named as Sheffield Wednesday’s best young talent
According to Patrick McKenna, one of the FLW Wednesday fan analysts, the 19-year-old is the team’s most promising potential.
“We do have a few players right now that do appear to be prospects, like [Bailey] Cadamarteri and Sean Fusire, but I believe Pierce Charles is at the top of the list and the most exciting of them all,” he stated.
“He also had his first taste of playing for Northern Ireland at the international level this season, and he did a really good job. There, he has demonstrated his qualities.
“It’s been brilliant watching him control the ball with his feet and display his range of passing. A lot of my friends around me who hadn’t seen him before were really impressed.
“In the appearances that he has had for us in the cup he has also done well. There is still work to do, he’s a young goalkeeper and he’ll be working on all the aspects of his game, but I think that there is definite talent there.”

Pierce Charles tipped for future at the top of the game
Top level teams are attempting to get Charles in the near future, even though he has never played in the league for the Owls.
Numerous Premier League teams were reportedly interested in the Northern Irishman, according to The Star, with Darren Witcoop recently naming Tottenham Hotspur as one of the interested parties.
According to McKenna, Charles possesses all the qualities necessary to become a premier modern glovesman, and the young player is anticipated to fetch a high price in the future.
“Like I touched on, the confidence that he has for a young keeper is right at the top of the scale,” McKenna continued. “With the ball at his feet, he exudes such confidence. I do believe that he might advance in the game because his passing is superior to that of many more seasoned keepers.
“The modern keeper now has to be adept at receiving backpasses, distributing the ball accurately, and having the ball at their feet. Of course, there are other reasons as well. Even in collecting the ball from crosses, where I initially believed he was a little cautious, I believe he is improving as a short stopper.
He is one of the most exciting homegrown possibilities the club has had in a long time, and I believe he will play at the highest level in the years to come.
“So out of the current crop I think he’s at the forefront, and I think that we’ll be selling him for quite a decent fee in the next few years.”
