January 18, 1976, Orange Bowl, Miami, Florida; Super Bowl X, Packers 21, Cowboys 17.
The Pittsburgh Steelers would be the team who shone the brightest in Super Bowl X, a match that featured the Dallas Cowboys’ flashy offensive onslaught against the Steelers’ steely defense and their gritty, running attack.
While everyone expected the Cowboys offense to be what everyone was talking about, it was Lynn Swann’s circus catch that will forever live in NFL Films highlight reels
.
The Steelers got in an early 7-0 hole when Roger Staubach hit Drew Pearson for a 29-yard touchdown. But it didn’t take them long to get right back in it.
Lynn Swann and Terry Bradshaw connected for a 32-yard throw, during which Swann outran the Cowboys defender and managed to keep both feet in bounds. This allowed Bradshaw to set up Randy Grossman for a seven-yard touchdown pass, tying the score at seven. Dallas led 10–7 at the half and went into the locker room after a field goal.
In the second half, Cowboys safety Cliff Harris made fun of Roy Gerela by giving him a faux pat on the helmet after he missed his second field goal of the match. Linebacker Jack Lambert became enraged and sent Harris to the ground, setting the Steelers on fire.
The Black and Gold led 15–10 after Gerela hit two field goals and the Steelers scored on a safety following a blocked punt. Bradshaw added to the lead with a 64-yard touchdown pass to Swann, who finished with four receptions for 161 yards and was named MVP.The Steelers won their second straight Super Bowl after the Cowboys rallied, but it was in vain as Mike Wagner batted down and intercepted Staubach’s final pass, which gave the Steelers a 21-17 victory.
