BREAKING: Mike McCarthy to officially return to Dallas Cowboys for fifth season despite playoff loss

BREAKING: Mike McCarthy to officially return to Dallas Cowboys for fifth season despite playoff loss.

It is official. Mike McCarthy will be returning to the Dallas Cowboys.

Following a story from The Dallas Morning announcement on Tuesday night that gave the impression that the announcement was highly plausible, ESPN broke the story on Wednesday night. McCarthy will formally begin his fifth year in Dallas.

On the one hand, this seems like a reasonable move considering McCarthy has been in charge of a Cowboys club that has made significant progress in the last few years. Over the past three seasons, the Cowboys have won 12 games, qualified for the playoffs each time, and won two NFC East crowns.

McCarthy, on the other hand, has only made it to the Divisional Round of the playoffs once, and he lost that match. Needless to mention, he also just oversaw the team’s spectacular collapse in the Wild Card Round against his old team, the Green Bay Packers.

The Cowboys will not be changing, despite the appearance that the playoff loss would have been sufficient to prompt them to do so.

In any case, McCarthy is about to start his last season under contract with the Cowboys. It would seem dubious to give him an extension, so maybe Dallas would let him try his luck and demonstrate his worth in the same manner that they allowed Jason Garrett do in 2019.
