Ex-FL Gator, Saints Linebacker Ronald Powell Dies At 32.

Linebacker Ronald Powell was a father and son who was “cherished by so many,” the NFL Players Association said.

FLORIDA — Ronald Powell, a former New Orleans Saints linebacker and former Florida Gators player, has died of an unknown cause. He was 32.

The NFL Players Association announced the news Tuesday on X, formerly Twitter, alongside a photo of Powell.

“Today we mourn the loss of Ronald Powell- a father, a brother and a son who was loved and cherished by so many. We send comfort to all those who knew Ronald,” the association wrote.

According to the NFL, Powell was drafted by the Saints in 2014. The Riverside, California native was pick 29 in the fifth round of the draft.

Powell graduated from Rancho Verde High School in California before moving on the University of Florida in Gainesville.

Sports Illustrated reported Powell was “a five-star recruit and the consensus No. 1 prospect, regardless of position, in the class of 2010 from Rancho Verde High. He made an immediate impact with the Gators, recording 57 total tackles with seven sacks and 9.5 tackles for loss over his first two seasons in Gainesville.”

The outlet reported Powell played in 14 games for the Saints during his rookie season.

The Saints in a statement on Facebook expressed its sentiments Tuesday.

“We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Saint Ronald Powell.We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones during this difficult time,” the team wrote.

The Florida Gators football team shared a statement Tuesday afternoon on Powell’s death.

“We’re very saddened to learn about the passing of former Gators player Ronald Powell. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and loved ones,” the team wrote on X.

The Swamp, an X handle for the Ben Hill Griffin Stadium, in a tribute post to Powell sent condolences. In the post, a photo showed Powell during his UF days.
