Ex-Cleveland Browns assistant fired as New Orleans Saints offensive coordinator
After serving as the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints for 15 seasons, veteran NFL coach and former offensive assistant for the Cleveland Browns Pete Carmichael was let go, the organization confirmed.
After 15 seasons, Pete Carmichael, the offensive coordinator for the New Orleans Saints, was removed from his position as the offensive assistant for the Cleveland Browns.
Two days after the Saints ended the NFL season with a 9-8 record, missing out on the playoffs for the second straight year, 52-year-old Carmichael was let go from his position. With an average of 23.6 points per game this season, the Saints offense ranked ninth in the NFL, just above Cleveland’s 23.3 points per game in 10th place.
Carmichael, who became the Saints’ offensive coordinator in 2009, was the longest tenured offensive coordinator in the NFL. Prior to becoming OC, Carmichael served three seasons as the Saints’ quarterback coach from 2006 to 2008.
“These types of decisions are never easy to come to, but are necessary as we move forward,” Saints head coach Dennis Allen said in a statement. “I would especially like to thank Pete for his contributions to this staff for 18 seasons. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the job he has done and as a colleague.”

Carmichael worked as an offensive coach with the San Diego Chargers, Washington Redskins, and Cleveland Browns before signing with the Saints in 2006. The latter was his first NFL position. In 2000, Carmichael played one season as an offensive assistant and tight ends coach for the Cleveland Browns. Under head coach Chris Palmer, the Browns finished with a 3-13 record in their second season after their rebirth in 1999, ranking lowest in the NFL with an average of 10.1 points per game. Carmichael was a college coach before moving to Cleveland. He was the assistant offensive line coach at New Hampshire and the quarterbacks coach at Louisiana Tech.
