Kirk Herbstreit did not receive a single text from anyone at Ohio State following his son’s commitment to play football at Michigan. It made him concerned about how he will be received in Columbus going forward.
While there is no animosity between the former Buckeyes quarterback and the current coaching staff, the latter will not mention That School Up North in any way.
Chase Herbstreit, Kirk’s son, is a three-star quarterback in the 2025 recruiting class. He only earned one scholarship offer from Sherrone Moore and the Wolverines. Due to a lack of opportunities at his father’s alma university, the 6-foot-2, 185-pound quarterback chose to play at Ann Arbour.
Kirk explained to Pardon My Take that he understands the business side of collegiate football. Ohio State had to do what it had to do, especially given the new scholarship limitations.
What an opportunity for him. You know, of all my children, this is the one who cried when they lost games, like he’s an Ohio State junkie. Ohio State did not grant him a scholarship and instead emphasised the importance of adapting to the changing reality.
— Kirk Herbstreit.
On the opposite side of that decision, Chase did what he needed to do, even if it was difficult. Michigan granted him the opportunity to play on scholarship. That’s a big honour.
Sherrone Moore and his staff believe, and I believe they saw his competitive attitude, fire, and what he accomplished on the pitch this year to give him a chance. Our family is particularly distinct because our entire lives have been marked by scarlet and grey.
— Kirk Herbstreit.
Of course, some Ohio State fans were outraged to learn that Herbstreit would even consider, let alone commit to, playing for their team’s main rival. Kirk doesn’t care.
Yeah, I’ve spent some time away from that world. I haven’t seen a lot of reaction on purpose; I know people are excited, but 20% will be jerks. it I determined that it is one thing to take shots at me, but if you take a shot at my child and want to fight, it is not difficult for me to do it. So I just try to ignore it as much as possible and focus on the positives.
— Kirk Herbstreit.
With that considered, the Herbstreit family patriarch was a little concerned about the reception he would receive during his first trip to Columbus following his son’s commitment. The Buckeyes’ coaching staff did not contact Kirk regarding Chase’s commitment. Not even Ryan Day. They (momentarily) avoided him!
Ohio State will meet Michigan in the Big House next November. Kirk Herbstreit will support both his alma mater and his kid in the rivalry game. The way things turned out with Chase Herbstreit adds another unique twist to one of the world’s most famous athletic events!
