Report: Mike McCarthy to meet with Jerry Jones later this week

Report: Mike McCarthy to meet with Jerry Jones later this week.

According to one rumor, Mike McCarthy and Dak Prescott together would be the Cowboys’ best option when it comes to 2024.

The Dallas Cowboys have been playing their regular rhymes and rhythms since the conclusion of the season, which was less than 72 hours ago. When a season comes to an end, reports and such things are typical, and the Cowboys are regrettably accustomed to going through this process before February.

Many have been wondering if and when Mike McCarthy, the head coach, will make an announcement. Many fans are eager for the Cowboys to change after the Green Bay Packers humiliated Dallas, yet McCarthy has led the team to three consecutive postseason appearances and many victories in the regular season. You can debate yourself endlessly by focusing on the events of the previous about one thousand days.

Regardless of your opinion, it seems like we could have an answer sometime before the end of the week. On Tuesday night, the Dallas Morning News published a story containing a wealth of information, one of which was that Jerry Jones and Mike McCarthy would be meeting.

The report discussed the major factors surrounding this offseason for the Cowboys, including the more-than-likely extension that is to come for quarterback Dak Prescott.

Prescott did his reputation — and more importantly, the Cowboys — no favors with his poor performance against the Packers. The emotional response would be for Jones to throw up his hands and say it’s time to move on, but that’s not the prudent course.

Plus, it’s financially prohibitive.

It’s not wise to dismiss the strides you saw Prescott take during the regular season because of Sunday’s failure. The obvious affinity the quarterback showed for McCarthy and the faith he displayed in his coach’s guidance shouldn’t be disregarded.

You can fantasize endlessly about Belichick. In this league, he has the best head coaching record.

This does not imply that he is the coach that can bring out the best in Prescott and the Cowboys right now.

The only relevant discussion over McCarthy’s future that I could find before to the Green Bay game concerned whether the team would make enough progress to warrant an extension for him. That is no longer on the table. How does Jones go from there to actually thinking about taking a coaching change?

That’s quite a leap, no matter how hard the Green Bay loss hit.

McCarthy has one year left on his contract. So does Prescott unless/until his contract is addressed.

A strong argument can be made that it’s in the Cowboys’ best interest to give these two one more year together before moving on.

That starts by letting McCarthy know he’ll be back for a fifth season before the week is done.

On one hand it is fair to say that McCarthy pulled the best football that we have ever seen out of Prescott when he took over as offensive play-caller, but on the other hand the team just got destroyed in embarrassing fashion.

They became the first team to ever lose to a #7 seed in the playoffs and were the only home team to lose across Wild Card Weekend.

In circumstances such as these, it is customary to assume that there must be a fall guy, but that is only true since someone is typically at fault.

Even though it’s a contentious topic, Prescott’s contractual obligations serve as another evidence that he is here to stay.

The organization is not nearly as linked to McCarthy as their pay cap is to the quarterback, but it’s one thing if you can accept that as a fan or as a member of the team.

But this report is perhaps laying the groundwork. We will see.

Numerous times, it has been mentioned that Mike McCarthy is approaching the last year of his deal with the Cowboys, and the franchise forced

Jason Garrett to go through his before deciding not to extend it at the conclusion of the 2019 campaign.

Maybe the leadership thinks that is the wisest course of action at this particular moment, but the drama and hysteria surrounding that scenario would be enormous during the entire season.
