“A real coup” – West Brom told to move for Ipswich Town, Southampton players in January

Despite West Bromwich Albion navigating their way through challenging financial restrictions, the January transfer window will open up an opportunity for the club to bolster their squad in order to maintain a promotion push back to the Premier League.

Shilen Patel, an American investor, just bought Albion for a reported £60 million, although the club is still reeling from Guochuan Lai’s former ownership and has been subject to an EFL-imposed business plan since the summer to avoid breaking Profit and Sustainability Rules (PSR).

This will probably limit the amount of activity the Black Country team can do in the coming year, with a sell-to-buy strategy likely to be considered in order for the club to meet the EFL’s requirements.

Despite their constraints, the Baggies were able to bring 11 new faces to The Hawthorns over the summer, with Albion fans hoping for more arrivals to move the club one step closer to regaining promotion to the top flight.

With the January transfer window just around the corner, West Brom fan pundit Callum Burgess has advised the club on which players to pursue.

West Brom offered January window targets

Ronnie Edwards

Baggies fan pundit Callum Burgess believes the club should enter the loan market, focusing on players from Premier League clubs who haven’t had a continuous run of first-team games.

Burgess stated: “I believe it would be prudent for Albion to look at Premier League clubs and their reserve players to see who may make a significant impact in the second half of the season.

“For example, I’d target Ronnie Edwards, who hasn’t played much for Southampton since joining from Peterborough in the summer. If Albion were to take him on loan, he would be a huge coup and could have a beneficial impact on the club with his ball-playing ability from behind.

“I believe he would be a great addition for Carlos Corberan’s style of play, and Corberan would be able to strengthen his defensive game as well.

“I also think Albion should look at Ipswich Town to see if they can get Ali Al-Hamadi on loan. I would like the club to seek for another midfielder as well.”

Burgess went on to say, “The ideal January transfer window for me would be to sign Edwards and Al-Hamadi on loan, along with a midfielder and, if we’re lucky, another attacker near the end of the window.”

“When you look at West Brom’s attacking options off the bench with (John) Swift, (Grady) Diangana, (Lewis) Dobbin and (Jed) Wallace, they haven’t been able to contribute much when called upon, so another player who can impact games as a substitute will definitely be a priority for us.”

With the start of the new year being such a difficult period to negotiate player contracts, the Black Country club should strive to capture buried jewels from top-tier sides.

Edwards and Al-Hamadi’s recommendations make logical sense, since Corberan’s side is in severe need of cover at both ends of the game as the Championship season enters its second half.

A commanding and hungry central defender may be required to pair Kyle Bartley at the heart of the defence, with loanee Mason Holgate struggling to fill the void left by Cedric Kipre’s departure and Semi Ajayi’s injured absence.

Albion’s January transfer window will be crucial for leading scorer Josh Maja, as summer signing Devante Cole has yet to establish himself in the first-team. Al-Hamadi, who struggled to earn consistent starts under Kieran McKenna with the Tractor Boys, will be eager to demonstrate his value as a second-tier option.
