Ballon d’Or winner acknowledges that he wished to play for Celtic.

Michael Owen, a former England international and Liverpool player, acknowledged that he would have preferred to play for Celtic. The 45-year-old, who won the Ballon d’Or in 2001, has declared that he would have played for the Hoops despite his family’s ties to Celtic.
At Manchester United, Owen and Sir Alex won the Premier League, which strained relations with Liverpool supporters. After that, the player would join Stoke City.

According to Record Sport, the former hitman disclosed that he grew up following Celtic and had a family connection to the team.

It really boils down to your family, isn’t it? My dad’s mother was Scottish, and he spent a lot of time in Scotland growing up. The Donnelly family, my grandparents’ side of the family, is Glaswegian.

As a child, you listen, hear, and ask questions. My dad was raised in Scotland, and his entire family was a big Celtics supporter. When I was little, my dad purchased me a Celtic shirt, of course, and I cheered for them as my team in Scotland. That’s the only similarity.

“I played against Celtic a few times, of course, but that’s the only link I have. It’s my dad’s side, and everyone on his side of the family was a huge Celtics supporter.

Before the player decided to go from Newcastle to Old Trafford in 2009, Owen was questioned about rumors that he was considering a pre-contract move to sign with Celtic.

Indeed, playing for Celtic would have been an honor for me. Yes, I would. That’s what I believe. There were a lot of athletes moving up there at the time, of a comparable caliber, I thought at that stage in my career.

As a player in their 30s, it’s actually pretty pleasant to not have to defend or chase around a lot. You always had the ball and had opportunities. I believe that would have been a beautiful way to wrap up my career. I don’t wish, but at the time, I would have wanted to have finished my career at Celtic.

Owen’s lightning-fast pace and accurate finishing made him a household name when he first appeared at Liverpool as a teenage phenom. His reputation as a world-renowned player was solidified by his memorable goal for England versus Argentina during the 1998 World Cup.

“Top players who may have been in the 30, 31, 32 range and who had scored a few goals two or three years prior.” You always have the majority of the ball, let’s face it. You will have more opportunities and get the majority of the ball when you play for Celtic.

After winning numerous trophies with Liverpool and winning the 2001 Ballon d’Or, Owen moved to Real Madrid for £8 million. Owen returned to the Premier League with Newcastle United following a lackluster stint in Spain, and he later crossed the rubicon with Manchester United. His later years were marred by injuries, but his 40 goals for England and 158 goals for Liverpool still demonstrate his skill. Although Owen won trophies with Liverpool and subsequently United, he would finish his career at Stoke City.
