Chelsea’s little progress this season has seemed better than it should because they were so awful the

previous one. To be honest, we still find ourselves in the middle of the table and, when we play well, we

still don’t appear close to where we should be.

Instead of easily defeating the bottom clubs in the league, we’re just scraping by, and there aren’t any

indications that this team is truly gelling yet. Many are content to point the finger solely at injuries and

the youngness of the team, but as the months go by, an increasing number of analysts are asserting that

the management has some responsibility.

Shay Given is an expert in the Premier League, so hearing his opinions on 5 Live’s Monday was

intriguing.

“There are doubts regarding him. Is he the ideal candidate to guide Chelsea’s forwards? You might write

them off as the dream team, but they aren’t quite reaching the heights of past clubs. I believe he is, but

he also ought to be getting more out of those midfield guys.

It’s difficult to argue against much of it. We’re willing to wait and see what Pochettino can do each week,

but if we’re going to be persuaded that he’s the correct man in the long run, we need to see a significant

improvement in the second half of the season.
