Ruben Selles delivers brutally honest assessment of Hull City’s Championship plight

Hull City is rooted to the foot of the table and hasn’t won since October 1.

Ruben Selles, Hull City’s new coach, says he is well aware of the magnitude of the work before of him at the MKM Stadium following his first defeat as manager.

Selles struggled to earn a 1-1 draw against Watford just two days after his first training session. However, he performed poorly at Coventry City on Saturday, losing 2-1 despite taking the lead twice.

City were well thrashed in the end, and the scoreline could have been more emphatic but for custodian Ivor Pandur’s superb penalty save. It leaves them two points down at the basement of the Championship with 25 games remaining.

The Tigers have won only three of their 21 games. They have just maintained one clean sheet this season and have not won a game since October 1, a streak that now stands at 13 games.

Going into the vital festive period, the Tigers know they must find a way to get back on track, and quickly, beginning with Saturday’s crucial home match against Swansea City, their final home game of the calendar year.

“No, don’t make a mistake,” Selles replied when asked if the job was more than he had anticipated. “When we arrived, the team was at rock bottom. It wasn’t going to be easy at Hull City. It wasn’t simple in Southampton, Reading, or now, so we know exactly what type of job we have.

“I believe we know exactly how to get out of it, but it is not easy. It is not going to be like right there. We were discussing a 50/50 situation if we kept the lead in the last game at 1-0. I expected the job to be difficult, but I believe it can be accomplished.
