How Everton’s Jarrad Branthwaite established himself as Europe’s in-demand Centre-back

Everton has acquired some notable players in recent years. Real Madrid’s James Rodriguez was captured. The arrival of Moise Kean from Juventus. Three players were taken from Barcelona: Lucas Digne, Yerry Mina, and Andre Gomes.

When the Toffees signed a 17-year-old center-back from Carlisle United in January 2020, there wasn’t much of a celebration. Carlo Ancelotti, the first-team manager at the time, was not even quoted in the club’s official statement announcing the deal. After making just one EFL Cup appearance for Everton a year later, Jarrad Branthwaite was quietly sent on loan to Blackburn Rovers.

It is fair to say there is much more focus on the defender now. In contrast to the deals for Rodriguez, Kean and Gomes, the addition of Branthwaite has proved to be a fantastic piece of business from Everton, a club whose generally poor recruitment over the last few seasons contributed to their 10-point deduction in the current campaign.

Having been found to be in breach of the Premier League’s spending rules again this week, Everton may be forced to raise funds through player sales in the January window. Branthwaite, who has earned admiring glances from Manchester United, Chelsea and Real Madrid, looks like the most obvious sacrifice.

It’s unlikely Sean Dyche will wish to let him go. With a strong partnership at the back with James Tarkowski, Branthwaite has contributed significantly to Everton’s record of holding the fewest clean sheets of any side in the division.

The 21-year-old did not start either of Everton’s opening two games of the season due to a lack of match fitness. On the first weekend of the season, Dyche started Michael Keane and Robert Tarkowski at the center of the defense against Fulham. On the second matchday, he did the same thing. Branthwaite was called in for the match against Wolverhampton Wanderers the following weekend after losing 1-0 and 4-0. Since then, he has not turned back.

Branthwaite looks like he has been playing at this level for years. In that respect, last season’s loan spell at PSV was hugely important. The Centre-half was a huge success in Eindhoven, with his temporary boss Ruud van Nistelrooy describing him as a “complete” defender.

Branthwaite appears to have been playing at this caliber of play for a long time. That’s why the loan period at PSV last season was so significant. The center-half was a big hit in Eindhoven, where Ruud van Nistelrooy, his interim manager, called him a “complete” player.
