Gilmore on playoff meltdown: ‘Didn’t see it coming’

‘Didn’t see it coming,’ says Gilmore of his postseason breakdown.

Texas’s Arlington In all honesty, the Dallas Cowboys and Green Bay Packers were never that close in their game, even if the final score was 48-32. The Cowboys’ season is coming to an abrupt end on Super Wild Card Weekend because the latter came out firing while the former repeatedly struggled to get into gear.

While McCarthy’s offense was able to save the game late, it was undoubtedly the worst defensive performance of the Dan Quinn era. Jordan Love, along with running back Aaron Jones, looked like the best Aaron Rodgers of all time on Sunday at AT&T Stadium, leaving the Dallas defense completely flat.

Cornerback Stephon Gilmore remarked, “They started out hot and we weren’t able to stop them, especially on the defensive side.” “We struggled to establish a rhythm. They just punted once, I believe. That’s what it ultimately came down to, then.”

They punted three times in all, but two of those came when head coach Matt LaFleur started to let up on the accelerator when the game was already well within reach. The Packers were ahead 27-0 at one point in the second quarter, but tight end Jake Ferguson’s touchdown allowed quarterback Dak Prescott to finally score a point.

The Cowboys defense recorded zero sacks and zero takeaways for the first time this season, while the Packers dominated the game in terms of time of possession, conversion rate, yards per play, amount of explosive plays, etc.

Still at a loss for words, Gilmore replied, “I don’t know,” “They were running, but I’ll have to watch the tape to really see.”

“I’m surprised. I didn’t see this coming.

In a locker room atmosphere that was as solemn and mournful as it’s ever been, cornerback Jourdan Lewis also weighed in on what happened against the Packers — echoing Gilmore.

“I’m not sure,” he remarked. “I’m a little upset. You’re not sure how to feel. We were undoubtedly unaware that we would experience this, so soon. … They had our number the entire day, and we just never executed at all. They took advantage of the fact that we didn’t perform to the best of our abilities.”

Lewis claims the Packers showed off a few new wrinkles, but that wasn’t the game-winning factor in the first few minutes.

“Of course, there’s going to be something in a playoff game, but we’ve got to be able to rely on our technique; just our basic game plan,” he stated. “So just being aware of our leverages and other things, and refraining from trying to play when it’s not your turn to play.” They simply exploited that because that was who they were.

“They took advantage of us being pretty aggressive and they just did a good job.”

And so, the Cowboys conclude another season filled with heartache, but, all things considered, this time it feels like nothing (if anything) they’ve ever experienced before.
