Rangers have reportedly contacted AS FAR regarding Moroccan defender Hatim Essaouabi.
Reports in his native country state that the Ibrox team “have been impressed” by Essaouabi’s performances and are thinking of making a move for the 24-year-old to join in the summer as Philippe Clement looks to expand his options at center-back. Last summer, the Gers also signed striker Hamza Igamane from the same club for £1.7 million.
Aside from a brief loan stint at TAS Casablanca two years ago, Essaouabi, whose market value is just under £750,000, has spent the majority of his career in the Moroccan capital of Rabat. It is believed that Rangers will prioritize acquiring a center-back in the January transfer window, with a loan deal also possible, following injuries to John Souttar and Neraysho Kasanwirjo.
Although a central defender was already on the agenda before Souttar’s injury in last week’s Europa League draw with Tottenham, the news that the Scotland international will be out for weeks has made it even more imperative to have cover in the middle of defense, as Robin Propper and Leon Balogun are currently Clement’s only first-choice options.
