Major VAR call made for FA Cup with Middlesbrough and Michael Carrick to be impacted by new rule
Middlesbrough entertain Blackburn Rovers in the FA Cup next month
VAR will only be used in this season’s FA Cup starting with the fifth round, according to confirmation from the
Football Association. Thus, the technology will not be used in Middlesbrough’s third-round match against Blackburn
Rovers on Saturday, January 11.
“Video Assistant Referees (VAR) will only be used in the 2024-25 Emirates FA Cup from the Fifth Round onwards,”
the FA announced in a statement on Monday afternoon. It has been decided that VAR will be used for every game in
the competition’s fifth round up until the final at Wembley Stadium. The third and fourth rounds will not use it.
The Football Association additionally stated that “VAR has only been used in the Emirates FA Cup previously for
matches at Wembley Stadium and at Premier League grounds due to the infrastructure, workforce and costs that are
required for its operation.”
The press release continued: “This decision ensures that there is a consistent refereeing approach for all clubs taking
part in the same stage of the competition.”
Because of the disparity and irregularity in the different FA Cup matches, the prior decision to exclusively deploy
VAR at Premier League venues was criticised. Additionally, according to Liverpool.com, VAR is only used in the
Carabao Cup final and is not used in earlier stages.
The match between Boro and Rovers is scheduled to begin at 12 p.m. next month, despite the fact that neither ITV
nor the BBC have picked them. International broadcasters choose to cover the match, hence it has been moved
forward from its customary Saturday 3pm kickoff time. The decision has been enthusiastically received by Rovers
fans who wish to go to Teesside to watch the game.
In their previous meeting at the Riverside, Rovers secured the maximum number of points thanks to a late goal from
Dominic Hyam.
