Automatic promotion may not be the only thing Sheffield United and Leeds United are battling against each other for in January.
The two Yorkshire clubs are both presently in the top two of the Championship and may look for reinforcements next month to enhance their drive for the Premier League.
Despite being at the top of the table, Chris Wilder believes his Blades are a long way from being guaranteed promotion, which means they will almost certainly make new signings.
Sheffield United’s impending takeover is also likely to boost their position, and while many see Leeds as possessing the league’s strongest squad, they cannot afford to fall behind.
Goalkeeper, number 10, and striker are all positions that may be strengthened at Elland Road, and doing nothing will leave Leeds facing the play-offs again in May.
Sheffield United to battle Leeds for Louie Barry
Sheffield United and Leeds United pursued many of the same targets this summer, and it appears that they will do so again.
Callum O’Hare and Jesurun Rak-Sakyi, for example, chose Bramall Lane over Leeds, despite Jayden Bogle’s decision to transfer across Yorkshire.
According to the Sheffield Star, the two clubs may face off again when Sheffield United joins the race for Louie Barry.
Leeds have already been connected with Barry ahead of the window opening in just over two weeks, as Aston Villa looked poised to recall him early from his loan term at Stockport County.
Barry has already scored 14 goals in 20 League One games this season, and Villa are eager to move him to a higher level.
Sunderland, Middlesbrough, and Burnley have also been mooted as possible destinations for the former Barcelona junior player.
Carlton Palmer has told Leeds to sign ‘huge talent’ Barry
Leeds could undoubtedly use a number nine in January, but Barry doesn’t quite meet the bill, given his preference for playing on the left.
However, it hasn’t stopped former Leeds midfielder Carlton Palmer from urging his former team to complete a loan move for a man he considers ‘excellent’.
He remarked, “He found his feet at Stockport last season and this season, and he’s done fantastically well.” He is a big talent.
“The one thing Villa will be concerned about if they recall him from Stockport and send him to a Championship side is that he will not be seated on the bench, so Leeds must show them that he will play week in and week out.
“He hasn’t played at that level before, so it will be a major gamble for Leeds at this time. Perhaps if they can acquire a loan with the intention of making a permanent move, they will look for him in the future, which would be good business since he has a very bright future ahead of him.”
