Astros agree to deal with No. 49 international prospect.

The Astros are hoping to recruit a highly regarded Dominican outfielder this season in an effort to build on their track record of success in the foreign market.

Opening day for the 2024 signing window was Monday, and Houston agreed to terms with Anderson Paula, the No. 49 international prospect according to MLB.com. With a $5.284 million pool, the Astros have not yet verified the deal.

Paula has tons of power potential, and that tool makes him one of the most intriguing international prospects on the market. He shows power to all fields, and his approach will get better once he begins to train with the Astros. Like all prospects his age, there is some risk. Unlocking his upside will be largely dependent on his ability to make contact and his overall bat-to-ball skills.

Paula has the arm talent to play a corner outfield position and is athletic enough to be an average runner. Once he reaches adulthood and his body fully develops, there’s also a potential he gets stronger and bigger, which should boost all aspects of his game. His makeup and hard ethic have won him accolades. Paula receives training in the Dominican Republic from MVP.

Between January 15 and December 15, international players are able to sign with Major League teams. Prior to signing, he must turn 16 and be 17 by September 1st of the following year.

In other words, athletes who were born between September 1, 2006, and August 31, 2007, will be able to sign during the next signing window.
